An appreciation of the tyres influence is crucial to the design of the cars suspension. They are the only components on the car that are normally in contact with the ground. An understanding of how the four contact patches are able to react to inputs and provide feedback is vital.
It can be argued that the primary aim of the race cars geometry, dynamics and aerodynamics is to extract the maximum performance from the tyres. The vehicle dynamics engineer requires answers to “what if” scenarios from the following three important tyre related characteristics:

  • Control (the car’s response to the driver’s inputs)
  • Stability (the ability to maintain course despite external influences)
  • Handling (the ease with which the driver can attain cornering potential and the perception of the behaviour)
